Robert Schumann: Overture to the Opera «Genoveva» op. 81
Robert Schumann: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in A minor op. 54
Robert Schumann: Symphonie No. 3 in E flat major op. 97 «Rhenish»
Splendour and passion, tender poetry and rousing verve define this stunning programme with some of the most popular works by the great Romantic composer Robert Schumann. The «Rhenish» Symphony was composed in a very brief, happy space of time and perfectly balances cheerfulness and contemplation at the height of Schumann’s mastery. The Piano Concerto in A minor, on the other hand, is the musical documentation of his love for piano virtuoso Clara Wieck – and of their struggle to be allowed to marry. By the time of the premiere, she was both soloist and Schumann’s wife. Born in Siberia in 1955 and now living in Basel, the award-winning pianist Sergey Tanin introduces himself to the Tonkunstler with this work. On the podium, the young Colombian conductor Ana Maria Patiño-Osorio will make her Tonkunstler debut.
